I thought a ferret would be a great animal, and they were, though it was hard dealing with all the health problems of what is effectively a man-made creature (the ferrets you can get in pet stores do not exist in the wild, they are fully domestic).
Ferrets are, by far, the smartest animals I've ever lived with. (I'm including my human roommates in this list). They are extremely aloof, ferrets are to cats what cats are to dogs, and they are unbelievably curious.
They're also the best judges of character I've ever met. My ferrets were never wrong on the characters of the people they met, though I didn't always listen at the time.
Eventually I got Max a playmate, Sagittarius Excalibur (where you can find an explanation of Max's name), and they became best friends.
Having ferrets scampering around my feet, doing the ferret war dance, moving all my stuff and just generally causing funny trouble was a delight in my life. Maxmillion ended up becoming king of my roost, the blurry picture from above demonstrates the younger Max, he ended up putting on weight and becoming a rather enormous ferret, lounging around the house watching over his domain.
Sadly, Max died after a many year battle with adrenal tumors. He had survived a bilateral adrenalectomy, but ended up never coming back to full health, finally dying due to a urinary track infection, partly caused by a stupid herbal flea dip. Frickin' herbal remedies aren't tested by the FDA. Grrr.
